Married Life W2: All the Dogs

First party with the hotdog roller!

(Blake’s one registry request)

Week two started with picking up our dog to try acclimating her to the house before we returned to work Tuesday. We were hopeful the long weekend would be a good chance to leave her home alone in small doses before it was back to long work days for both of us. Gabby had never been alone in ‘my house’ before so we weren’t sure exactly how this would go. Blake is the best ‘dog Dad’ but the whole pet thing is still pretty new to me. I grew up in a hamsters as pets kind of family - we never had a dog or cat.

It’s important to me that this blog stays honest so I’ll say I think Friday was one of our worst days not just of marriage but since we’ve been together. We rarely bicker and almost never talk unkindly to each other but for some reason we got on a bad path Friday and kept going. Literally one week into marriage and we had our first crummy day. Weirdly, that Sunday our Pastor told us he got call from several other couples who had a terrible day Friday and couldn’t even pinpoint why. I’m happy to report, it passed and Saturday and Sunday were good days.

Saturday we had our first married get together. Blake’s one big request from our registry was a hot dog roller and thanks to Coach Bob & Miss Kathy that dream became a reality! With a long weekend spent mostly at home getting Gabs settled in we decided it was the perfect chance to have a few friends over for food and games ( we love a good game night ). We had the best time and I continue to be grateful that we have such a sweet friend group.

Week one of marriage was dreamy and week two felt like WORK. We had some tough conversations, we worked together to make better compromises, and we both said more ‘I’m sorry’s than we’d probably like to admit. People say marriage is work, and they’re right. But it’s good work. It’s sanctifying work. I will say this: there’s no one I’d rather work at anything with than Blake. Thankful for his steadiness and grace on the not-so-awesome-days that come between really really good ones.

Highlight for week two: Boat day Monday. We got to have a boat day with Blake’s family on Monday for the holiday and it’s my favorite place to be. We even went back to the Alafia River, our place. Nothing makes me happier than being on the water with my love.

Low: Our morning routine this week felt murderously harder than usual. Week one it was my favorite part of the day, week two it was my least. Funny how that works, huh? Can’t even really pinpoint what went wrong but celebrating that we stuck it out and got through the yucky mornings til they felt good again.
